Door-to-door sales is often seen as an outdated marketing strategy, but it is still a very effective way to get in front of potential customers. This post will cover the basics of door-to-door sales and how you can be successful using this technique. So what are you waiting for? Read on!
Door-to-door sales have been around for decades, but many marketers have turned their backs on this old-school technique because they think people no longer trust it or see it coming. This couldn't be any further from the truth, though; plenty of businesses rely heavily on door-to-door sales every year to bring them new business and keep their existing clients happy.
Here are some tips that you can use to be successful at door-to-door sales:
1. Be prepared for rejection! People will flat-out turn you down, but this is normal. Don't feel discouraged because somebody "close" to signing on your dotted line may be just around the corner.
2. Talk less, listen more! Remember that these people are letting you into their homes, don't abuse that! Plus, listening is a great way to learn what somebody likes or doesn't like about your product. Please don't leave until they've had their say and you know all of the details.
3. Don't act crazy! Nobody wants an over-zealous nut case knocking on their door at 7 in the morning for 5 hours straight (no matter how excellent your product is). The point of this job is not to annoy people; it's supposed to be fun and easy! If you're interrupting people during breakfast/dinner/TV, you're doing something wrong.
4. Be patient! This goes back to #2 about listening more than talking, but it's crucial in door-to-door sales because you'll meet some tough people who don't want your product no matter what you say or do. Don't be discouraged; there are still plenty of easy ones out there!
5. Keep your eyes on the prize! If you're not here for the money (and chances are if you're reading this article that maybe you aren't), then keep focused on getting as many signups as possible. Perhaps these people won't turn into money right away. Still, they will eventually help out once they see how great of a company it is and hopefully become a returning customer!
6. Make sure you have a comfortable product to sell! Nobody wants to buy something from somebody who's sweaty and smells terrible, gross! Plus, the more comfortable you are with your product, the easier it'll be for people to get along with it. You can't expect everyone to love what you're selling but do the best that you can to make a good impression.
7. Ask questions when needed! If somebody seems hesitant, ask if something would convince them or what they need/want for this deal to go through. Most of the time, people want reassurance, and once they get it, boom! Signup done and money made.
8. Smile and be kind! We all know that this one is hard to do constantly, but it does make a difference. People want to buy from somebody friendly and kind; the more open you are with people, the easier it'll be for them to trust you.
9. Exercise! This may sound like a random tip, but I mean, come on! Who wants to go on their doorstep with somebody breathing down their necks? Nobody likes being suffocated, so keep a distance between yourself and your customer/potential customer at all times!
10. Get off on time! If there's anything worse than working overtime for free, it's leaving too early without making any money... nobody wants that, right? You always work extra if you have to, but make sure that nobody takes advantage of you.
So now that you know how to be successful at door-to-door sales, go out there, knock on as many doors as you can and make some more friends! (and of course leads or sales for your company)
